Columbia Secures 20th Win of the Season

Hannibal, Mo. – This evening the 10th ranked Columbia College women's basketball team was back on the court when they traveled to Hannibal, Missouri to face the Hannibal-LaGrange University Trojans in an AMC matchup. The Cougars rolled to victory over the Trojans by a final score of 77-39 to win their 14th straight game as well as lock in their 20th win of the season. Columbia improves to 20-5 on the season and 18-1 in conference play.

The Cougars started the game on a 12-0 run through the first three minutes. The Trojans would finally get on the board with six and a half to go, but Columbia continued to cruise on offense as they pushed their lead 23-8 after one quarter of play.

The Cougar's offense continued to roll as they held a 20 point lead midway through the second quarter. Columbia's defense was making the Trojans work for open looks as nothing was coming easy. The Cougars controlled the first half as they led 40-23 at halftime. Columbia outrebounded the Trojans 19-11 and caused 12 Trojan turnovers in the half.

The Cougars picked up right where they left off as the third quarter began. The Trojans were trying to disrupt Columbia and chip into the lead, but the Cougars maintained a steady lead throughout the quarter. Heading into the final quarter of play Columbia led 58-36.

The Cougars remained aggressive on offense in the fourth quarter as they held all momentum. Columbia's defense held the Trojans scoreless for over half of the quarter before the Trojans knocked down two free throws. The Cougars, holding the Trojans to just three points in the fourth, cruised to a 77-39 victory, winning their 14th straight game, while outrebounding the Trojans 43-28 and creating 22 Trojan turnovers in the game.

For Columbia, five players were in double digits including, Ashlee Marlatt (13), Mai Nienhueser (11), and Sarah Walters, Geena Stephens, and Morgan Brandt all tallied 10 points apiece. Nienhueser and Ukari McKinney both pulled down seven rebounds, while Marlatt had a team high four assists on the night. The Cougars went 14-17 from the line for 82 percent in the contest.

Columbia College is back in action on Saturday, February 10th when they host the Harris-Stowe State University Hornets in an AMC matchup. The game is set to tip-off at 1:00 p.m.
