Cougars Go 2-1 on Day One of Cowtown Classic

Fort Worth, Texas – The second ranked Columbia College softball team was back in action today as they opened the season with a triple header in the 2018 Cowtown Classic held in Fort Worth, Texas. The Cougars, who went 48-7 last season as well as finishing fourth in the 2017 NAIA Softball World Series, went 2-1 on the day to kick off the 2018 season.

In the first game of the day, the Cougars took on 15th ranked Morningside College (Iowa) and picked up their first win of the season with a 14-4 victory. Columbia was tied 2-2 after four innings, before they would light it up down the stretch scoring five runs in the fifth inning and another seven in the seventh, holding the Mustangs to just two runs during that time. Alexandra Linck went 2-4 with three runs scored and one RBI. In addition, Molly Carter was 2-5 with two runs and three RBI's, while Lexi Dickerson went 2-4 with one run scored and four RBI's. Kaitlyn Nottelmann was the winning pitcher as she struck out six batters, giving up just 5 hits in seven innings of work.

Columbia College faced off against Our Lady of the Lake University (Texas) in the second game of the day as they fell by a final score of 2-1. The Cougars had a tough time getting anything going in the game as they trailed 2-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth. Columbia would cut the lead to one in the sixth, but were unable to overcome OLLU in the final inning. Lexi Dickerson pitched 5.17 innings allowing one earned run off of seven hits. Emerson Yakle would take Dickerson's place, allowing only one hit while on the mound.

The Cougars were looking to bounce back from the second game when they took on SW Assemblies of God University (Texas) in their third game of the day. Columbia was able to defeat SAGU 1-0 in their final game of the day. The game remained scoreless until the top of the eighth when Columbia was able to score the only run of the game off of Libby Marko's single to leftfield. Marko went 2-3 with the winning RBI. Molly Carter was the winning pitcher as she struck out three batters and only allowed two hits in eight innings of play.  

The Cougars are back in action tomorrow morning when they take on William Penn University (Iowa) and Oklahoma Panhandle State University on the second day of the 2018 Cowtown Classic. Columbia will kick off their double-header at 11 a.m. against William Penn University (Iowa) followed by a 1 p.m. start for their game against Oklahoma Panhandle State University.
