Cougars Defeat Wildcats on the Road

Canton, Mo. – This afternoon the Columbia College baseball team was back in action when they traveled to Canton, Missouri, to take on the Culver-Stockton (Mo.) College Wildcats in a nonconference matchup. The Cougars, who are receiving votes in the latest NAIA Baseball Coaches' Top 25 Poll, were able to defeat the Wildcats by a final score of 9-4 to improve to 18-6 on the season.

Columbia College was able to put together 13 hits in the 9-4 win. They got off to a quick start in the game as they rallied for two runs in the top of the first to take an early lead. However, the Wildcats bounced back in the bottom half of the inning and rallied for four runs of their own to take a 4-2 lead into the second. The Cougars were able to pick up runs in the top of the second and the top of the fourth to tie the game at four and then rallied for five runs in the top of the sixth to take a 9-4 advantage. The Wildcats did their best to get back into the game but Columbia College was able to close them out down the stretch to pick up their 18th win of the season.

Jordan Copeland (0-0) got the start in this one allowing four hits and three earned runs in 1.2 innings on the mound. Lane Threlkeld (0-0), Mark Haire (2-0), and Derek Sallee (1-2) came into relieve Copeland as the three combined to allow seven hits and no earned runs while striking out seven batters in the final 7.1 innings of the game. Andrew Warner led the way offensively as he went 2-4 with three RBI's and a two run homerun (9). To go along with Warner, Jordan Wright went 4-5 with an RBI and Ethan Howser went 2-5 with an RBI to round out the top performers for Columbia.

The Cougars are back in action on Friday, March 23rd when they travel to St. Louis, Missouri, to take on the Missouri Baptist University Spartans in an AMC matchup. The game is set to start at 2 p.m.
