Box Score Savannah, Ga. – The Columbia College lacrosse team was back in action this afternoon when they traveled to Savannah, Georgia, to take on the fifth ranked Savannah College of Art and Design (Ga.) Bees in a nonconference matchup. The Cougars were unable to defeat the Bees as they fell by a final score of 11-9 to fall to 2-5 on the season.
The Cougars came out in the first quarter and got off to a tough start as a hat trick from Bees forward Brendan Buckley put SCAD up 3-0 in the first six minutes of the game. Columbia College quickly bounced back and were able to pick up goals from Cooper Heck and J.T. Huez but the Cougars found themselves trailing 3-2 at the end of the quarter. Neither team was able to find the back of the net through the first few minutes of the second but a Bees goal midway through the quarter put SCAD up 4-2. Columbia College answered with a second goal from J.T. Huez to cut the Bees lead to 4-3 but another late goal from SCAD put them up 5-3 at the halftime break.
The Cougars came out in the third quarter and were able to score less than 30 second in as Cooper Heck finished off his second to cut the Bees lead to 5-4. However, SCAD answered back quickly and scored back-to-back goals to go up 7-4 midway through the period. Despite being down, the Cougars battled back and were able to pick up back-to-back goals from Sam Crum and then a goal from Carson Morrissey with 15 second left in the quarter to tie the game at seven heading into the fourth.
The Cougars carried their momentum from the third quarter into the fourth and were able to take their first lead of the game four minutes into the period following a third tally from Cooper Heck. Their lead did not last long as the Bees were able to score three goals in a row to take a 10-8 lead late in the contest. Columbia College did their best to get back into the game and were able to trade goals with the Bees in the final minutes but that was as close as they would get as SCAD closed them out down the stretch to hand the Cougars their fifth straight loss.
Riley McDermott was in goal for Columbia recording 15 saves in the contest.
