Columbia, Mo. – This afternoon the Columbia College baseball team was back in action when they played host to the Harris-Stowe State (Mo.) University Hornets in the final game of the three game series. The Cougars, who took both games of the doubleheader against the Hornets yesterday, were able pick up the win this afternoon to improve to 22-8 on the season and 9-6 in conference play.
Columbia College was able to put together 10 hits this afternoon in the 8-5 win. The Hornets got off to a good start in this one as they got on the board first in the top of the second to take an early 1-0 lead. The Cougars bounced back and picked up runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth and the bottom of the fifth and held a 2-1 advantage heading into the sixth. Despite being down, Harris-Stowe battled back and were able to score four runs over the next few innings to take a 5-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh. Columbia College picked it up offensively in the seventh and were able to score two runs in the inning and added four runs in the bottom of the eighth to solidify their fourth straight win.
Cody Ebert (4-1) got the start in this one as the senior allowed three hits and one earned run in 3.0 innings of work. Chris Wall (1-1), Lane Threlkeld (0-0), and Craig Smith (3-1) came into relieve Ebert as the three combined to allow just four hits and three earned runs while striking out five in the final six innings of the game. Offensively, Ethan Howser went 2-3 with three RBI's, Alex Del Rio went 4-5 with three RBI's, and Andrew Warner went 0-1 with three walks and two runs scored to round out the top performers for Columbia.
The baseball team is back in action on Tuesday, April 3rd when they travel to Fulton, Missouri, to take on the William Woods (Mo.) University Owls in an AMC doubleheader. The first game is set to start at 4 p.m. with the second game to follow.
