Columbia, Mo. –The 15th ranked Columbia College softball team was back in action when they hosted the Missouri Baptist University Spartans in an AMC doubleheader. The Cougars won the first game by a score of 8-0 and the second game by a final score of 9-1 to improve to 22-9 on the season and 15-1 in conference play.
In the first game, the Cougars took the early 3-0 lead after one inning. The next three innings were scoreless for both teams, but in the bottom of the fifth Columbia grabbed three more runs and added two more in the sixth to end the game 8-0. Three Cougars homered including, Karli Leeper, Alexandra Linck, and Allyson Metz.
Lexi Dickerson was the winning pitcher as she allowed four hits and struck out four batters in six innings of work. Rachel Sullivan went 1-4 with two runs scored, Dakota Newton went 1-2 with one run scored, Alexandra Linck went 3-4 with two runs scored and four RBI's, Allyson Metz was 2-3 with one run scored and one RBI, Karli Leeper went 2-3 with one run scored and three RBI's, and Julianna Waldner went 1-3 with one run scored.
In the second game of the doubleheader, the offensive side of the game was much slower for each side as Columbia held a 1-0 lead for most of the game. The Spartans would tie the game at one in the top of the sixth, however the Cougars had an immediate response as they rallied off eight runs in the bottom of the inning, including a game ending grand slam from Natalie Dummitt to secure a 9-1 win in game two.
Kaitlyn Nottelmann was the winning pitcher as she only allowed three hits, one earned run, and struck out six batters in six innings on the mound. Sullivan went 1-3 with one run scored and one RBI, Waldner went 2-4 with one run scored and one RBI, Leeper was 1-3 with one run scored and one RBI, Dummitt went 3-4 with three runs scored and four RBI's, and Samantha Myers was 1-2 with one run scored.
The Cougars are back in action tomorrow, April 17th when they host the Park University Pirates in an AMC doubleheader. The first game of the doubleheader is set to start at 12:00 p.m. with the second game to follow.
