Cougars Split with Pirates

Parkville, Mo. – This afternoon the Columbia College baseball team was back in action when they took on the Park University Pirates in an AMC doubleheader. The Cougars won the first game by a score 9-0 and fell in the second game in extra innings by a score of 5-4 as they moved to 32-13 on the season and 18-10 in conference play.

The Cougars came out ready to roll as they took a commanding 6-0 lead after the first inning. The next few innings neither team was able to score any runs as the score remained the same after four innings. In the top of the fifth Columbia grabbed two more runs and added another one in the sixth. The Pirates continued to struggle to get on the board and fell to the Cougars 9-0 in game one of the doubleheader.

Dakota Stone was on the mound as he allowed just three hits and struck out five batters, while shutting out the Pirates. Offensively, Jordan Wright went 2-4 with one run scored, Andrew Warner went 2-3 with one run scored, Alex Del Rio was 2-4 including a homerun, with one run scored and three RBI's, Ethan Howser went 1-2 with two runs scored, Justin Randle was 3-3 with two runs scored and one RBI, Tanner Allen went 2-3 with one run scored and two RBI's, and Ward Mershon went 1-3 with two RBI's.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Cougars held the early 2-0 lead after three innings. In the bottom of the sixth, the Pirates rallied off three runs to take a 3-2 lead over Columbia. The Cougars continued to battle and were able to tie the game in the ninth to force extra innings. Each team went scoreless in the 10th, then Columbia grabbed one run to lead 4-3 in the top of the 11th, however in the bottom of the inning the Pirates scored two runs to end the game as the Cougars fell 5-4 in game two.

Chris Wall was the starting pitcher as he allowed five hits, two earned runs, and struck out five batters in 5.0 innings of play. Derek Sallee and Craig Smith came in and combined to allow just four hits, one earned run, and two unearned runs, as well as striking out five batters in 5.1 innings of work. Jordan Wright went 2-6 with one run scored and one RBI, Blade McKee also went 2-6 with one run scored, Ethan Howser went 2-5 with two RBI's, Joshua Miller went 1-4 with one run scored, and Bradley Prebay went 2-3.

The baseball team is back in action on tomorrow, April 28th when they play the final game of a three game series against the Pirates. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
