Parkville, Mo. – This afternoon the Columbia College baseball team was back in action when they played the third game of the three game series against the Park (Mo.) University Pirates in Parkville, Missouri. The Cougars, who split the doubleheader with the Pirates yesterday, were unable to pick up the win today as they were defeated by the Pirates by a final score of 9-3 to fall to 32-14 on the season.
Columbia College put together seven hits in the loss. They got off to a tough start in this one as the Pirates rallied for three runs in the bottom of the first to take an early lead in the game. They added one run in the bottom of the third and four runs in the bottom of the fourth to extend their lead to 8-0 heading into the fifth. The Cougars were able to get their bats going in the fifth and rallied for two runs in the top of the inning to cut Park's lead to 8-2. They continued to put the ball in play and added a final run in the top of the seventh to cut the lead to 8-3 but that was as close as they would get as the Pirates added a run in the bottom of the eighth to hand Columbia their second straight loss.
Cody Ebert (5-3) got the start in this one as he allowed five hits and three earned runs while striking out two in 1.1 innings of work. J.W. McGraw (5-0) and Jeremy Rettig (3-1) came in to relieve Ebert as the two combined to allow nine hits and six earned runs while striking out eight in the final 6.2 innings of the game. Offensively, the Cougars were led by Andrew Warner who went 1-2 with an RBI, Alex Del Rio who went 1-5 with an RBI, and Ethan Howser who went 1-4 with an RBI.
This marks the end of the regular season for the Columbia College baseball team. They will be back in action May 2nd-5th when they travel to Joplin, Missouri, to compete in the 2018 AMC Baseball Championships.
