Clermont, Fla. – The Columbia College softball team was back in action this evening when they continued play in Clermont, Florida for the 38th Annual NAIA Softball World Series. Tonight Columbia remained undefeated in tournament play as they defeated the Marian University Knights. The Cougars defeated the Knights by a final score of 2-1 to improve to 36-14 on the season.
After a long rain delay, the teams were able to take the field to begin play in a game that turned out to be slow offensively for each side. The Knights took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second and held that lead until the bottom of the fourth where the Cougars tied the game up at one. The next inning and a half were scoreless. In the bottom of the sixth, while Columbia was still looking for a way to grab the lead, Allyson Metz was able to get on base as she singled through the hole. Morgan Brandt entered the game to pinch run for Metz. Brandt made her time on the bases count as she worked her way around and scored the go ahead run for the Cougars. Columbia was able to hold off the Knights in the top of the seventh to lock in a 2-1 win.
Lexi Dickerson was the winning pitcher as she allowed six hits, one run, and struck out two batters in her seven innings of work. Offensively, Rachel Sullivan went 1-3, Molly Carter went 1-2 with one run scored, and Allyson Metz was 1-2.
The softball team is set to take on number four the University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma Drovers tomorrow, May 29th at 1:00 p.m. CST in Clermont, Florida.
