Columbia, Mo. – This afternoon the Columbia College softball team was back on the diamond as they took on day three of the 2018 AMC Conference Tournament. The Cougars, once again, defeated the Missouri Baptist University Spartans by a final score of 9-1 to advance to the championship round. The Cougars improve to 28-14 on the year.
The Cougars trailed 1-0 early to the Spartans and it would not be until the bottom of the fourth inning where Columbia was able to tie the game up as a sac fly from Allyson Metz would allow Molly Carter to score the tying run. The game was knotted at one heading into the fifth, where the Cougars held the Spartans scoreless in the top of the inning. Columbia found their groove as Carter doubled to drive in both Julianna Waldner and Rachel Sullivan to take a 3-1 lead. As the inning continued, Alexandra Linck hit a shot up the middle to score Dakota Newton as the Cougars extended the lead to 4-1. With the bases loaded, Olivia Denslow would end the game in five innings as she hit a grand slam sending the Cougars to the championship round of the tournament with a final score of 9-1.
Kaitlyn Nottelmann was the winning pitcher today as she allowed just three hits, one earned run, and struck out six batters in her 5.0 innings on the mound. Offensively, Sullivan went 1-2 with one run scored, Newton went 1-3 with one run scored, Carter was 2-3 with two runs scored and two RBI's, Linck went 1-3 with one run scored and one RBI, Natalie Dummitt went 2-3 with one run scored and one RBI, Denslow went 1-3 with one run scored and four RBI's, and Waldner was 1-2 with one run scored.
The Cougars will take the field tomorrow, May 4th when they face the Central Baptist College Mustangs in the 2018 AMC Conference Tournament Championship Round at the Antimi Softball Complex. They will play a best of three series against the Mustangs starting at 11 a.m. with the second game to follow. If a third game is necessary, it will take place on Saturday, May 5th. During the regular season, Columbia swept the Mustangs in a doubleheader with scores of 4-3 and 8-5 back on April 7th.
