Columbia, Mo. – The third ranked Columbia College volleyball team was back in action today when they took on the Williams Baptist University Eagles in an AMC matchup. The Cougars took the match in three sets (25-9, 25-17, 25-10). The Cougars now improve to 11-1 on the season and 1-0 in conference play.
The Cougars scored six straight to start off the match. As the score was quickly 10-1, the Eagles would call a timeout. Columbia had their foot on the gas leading 16-4. The Eagles could not come back from the early deficit as the Cougars wrapped up set one 25-9.
In the second set the Eagles hung around early as they trailed 4-3. Midway through the Cougars led 13-7 while they were looking to pull away. Williams Baptist remained in striking distance trailing 16-12 as the set progressed. As Columbia stretched the lead to 18-12, the Eagles called a timeout in search of a way to battle back. The Eagles continued to hustle, but the Cougars were too much to handle as they won set two 25-17.
A 7-0 Cougar run to start the third forced an early Eagle timeout. The timeout did not phase Columbia as the run continued to 11 before Williams Baptist would get on the board making it 11-1. The Cougars continued to roll leading 18-4. With control firmly in Columbia's hands they closed out the night with a 25-10 win to end the match in three.
Columbia was led by Caroline Clifford who recorded 9 kills. In addition, Thais Andrade tallied 8 digs, while Manuela Vargas had 24 assists on the night.
The volleyball team is back in action tomorrow, September 15th when they host the Freed-Hardeman University Lions in an AMC conference matchup. The match is set to start at 1:00 p.m. in Southwell Complex.
