Cougars Sweep Both Matches in Point Lookout

Point Lookout, Mo. –This afternoon the third ranked Columbia College volleyball team was back in action when they traveled to Point Lookout, Missouri to compete in the 2018 Chick Fil A Tournament hosted by College of the Ozarks. The Cougars played two games on the day, winning both, as they swept the University of Saint Mary (Kan.) Spires in three straight sets (25-17, 25-16, 25-16) and the Tabor (Kan.) College Bluejay's in three straight sets (25-15, 25-18, 25-14) to improve to 16-1 on the season. With the two sweeps this afternoon, Columbia College extends their winning streak to 12 straight games and have swept their last 11 matches.

In the Cougars first set against the Spires, Columbia came out and jumped out to an early 5-2 lead. The Spires battled back and tied the game at six before matching the Cougars point-for-point over the next few serves. With the score tied at 14, Columbia College was able to go on an 11-3 run to end the set to give them a 1-0 lead in the match with a 25-17 victory.

In the second set, both sides came out and exchanged points to start the game. However, with the score tied at 11 Columbia College was able to score the next three points to take a 14-11 lead midway through the set. The Cougars continued to play well as the set progressed and ended the game on an 8-1 run to take the second set by a final score of 25-16.

The Spires came out in the third set and were able to score the first two points of the game to take an early 2-0 lead. However, their lead did not last long as the Cougars were able to tie the game at two and then went on a 9-5 run to take an 11-7 lead in the set. Columbia College continued to play well over the next few serves and held a 21-12 lead late in the game. The Spires battled back and were able to score the next four points but that was as close as they would get as the Cougars closed them out down the stretch to take the third set by a final score of 25-16 and solidify their 10th straight sweep.

Ariadne Borges led the way for Columbia College as she finished with a team high 11 kills. In addition to Borges, Caroline Clifford finished with 10 kills, Thais Andrade finished with a game high 18 digs, Manuela Vargas finished with a match high 32 assists, and Kiersten Anderson added 11 digs to round out the top performers for Columbia.

In their second match against the Bluejays, Tabor came out and took an early lead in the game. However, their lead did not last long as the Cougars were able to tie the score at six. Both side exchanged points over the next few serves but with the score tied at 11 Columbia was able to use a 7-0 run to take an 18-11 lead in the game. Tabor did their best to get back into the game but the Cougars were able to cruise to a 25-15 victory to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

Columbia carried over their momentum from the first set into the second set as they jumped out to an early 5-0 lead. The Bluejays battled back and were able to tie the set at six, but an 8-3 run from the Cougars gave them a 14-9 lead midway through the set. Tabor once again was able to cut into Columbias lead and cut the deficit to 20-18 late in the game but the Cougars scored the next five points to take the second set 25-18 and a 2-0 lead in the match.

The third set started out with both sides exchanging points early. With the score tied at seven, the Cougars were able to go on a 10-3 run and held a 17-10 lead midway through the set. Tabor answered by scoring the next two points of the set to cut the lead to 17-12 but that was as close as they would get as Columbia closed them out down the stretch to win their 34th straight set by a final score of 25-14.

Caroline Clifford led the attack for Columbia College in this one as she had a match high 12 kills in the set. To go along with Clifford, Manuela Vargas tallied a match high 33 assists and Thais Andrade finished with a match high 16 digs to round out the top performers for Columbia.

The volleyball team is back in action on Tuesday, September 25th when they play host to the Stephens (Mo.) College Stars in an AMC matchup. The match is set to start at 7 p.m. in the Southwell Athletic Complex.
