Cougars Claim Fifth Straight Championship Title

Columbia, Mo. –  The Columbia College women's soccer team took the field today in the AMC Women's Soccer Championship Final when they hosted the third seed Missouri Baptist (Mo.) University Spartans. The Cougars defeated the Spartans 2-0, claiming the conference championship and improving their season to 18-3.

In the sixth minute of action, Columbia's Molly Klein passed the ball to Kelsey Mirts, who scored the first goal of the game, and her 21st of the season. The Cougars had nine shots and three on-goal, while Missouri Baptist had only one shot through the first 45 minutes of action. In the second half Cougar defender Allison Floyd netted her first goal of the season in the 57th minute and sealed the win for the Cougars.

Sophomore Kate Marshall was in goal to complete her 12th shutout of the season.

The victory marks the fifth consecutive year the Cougar women's soccer team has claimed the AMC postseason tournament title and six time overall in the eight year history of the program.

Following the contest, members of the All-Conference squads were recognized. Kate Marshall, Kaitlyn Tambke, Abigail Meyer, Molly Klein, Jewel Morelan and Kelsey Mirts have all been named AMC Women's Soccer First-Team All-Conference.

Freshman of the Year honors went to midfielder Jewel Moreland, the sixth player in program history to receive the accolade. Moreland scored nine goals and had four assists this season.

John Klein was named the AMC Coach of the Year. In his Eight years at the helm of the women's soccer program Klein claims the award for the fourth time.

Senior Kelsey Mirts took home Player of the Year honors after scoring 21 goals, assisting on 20 goals and racking up 54 points this season. She led the conference in assists and point and was second in goals. Mirts becomes the fifth Player of the Year in program history for the Cougars and this is the third-straight season a player from Columbia has won the award.

Additionally, in the AMC Team Tournament Records, which date back to 2008, Columbia is tied for most goals in the tournament with 16. Columbia is also tied for most assists with 15 and the Cougars set a new tournament record for most points in the tournament with 47.
