Columbia, Mo. – The second ranked Columbia College men's soccer team hosted the No. 2 seed Lyon (Ark.) College Scots in the American Midwest Conference Men's Soccer Championship Finals this afternoon. The Cougars defeated the Scots 3-2 to claim the 2019 AMC Tournament Championship title and move to 20-0 on the season as they keep their undefeated season alive.
It was an intense rematch between the Cougars and the Scots as Lyon came with fire in their eyes after Columbia defeated them 2-1 in double overtime to open up conference play earlier this season. The Columbia defense faced their biggest challenge of the year as the Scots leading scorer Marcos Fernandez scored in both the 24
th minute and the 31
st minute leaving the Cougars in a position they haven't been in all season.
Six minutes into the second half, Columbia cut the lead in half as
Augusto Camara found
Lesia Thetsane to bring Columbia back in the game at the 51
st minute. The Cougars kept pushing as
Caden Castello sent one up to Thetsane who headed one in the back of the net to tie the game just ten minutes after the first Cougar goal. The Scots goalkeeper came out to try and get the save, but
Nathan Durdle was able to set the ball up for
Nick Brandt in the 66
th minute who made it in the back of the net to give Columbia their first lead of the game. The Cougars held their ground for the remainder of regulation, claiming their eighth AMC Tournament title.
Harrisskitt was in goal this afternoon and recorded one save on the game.
Following the contest, members of the All-Conference teams were recognized.
