Men’s Soccer Season Ends in National Championships Semifinals

Irvine, Calif. – The No. 2 Columbia College men's soccer team ended their magical run tonight in the 2019 NAIA National Championships in Irvine, California. The Cougars were upset by the Broncos of Hastings (Neb.) College 2-1 to end their season in the semifinals of the NAIA National Championships.

The Broncos were quick to make their move in the first two minutes when they sent a ball from right field across and then cut it back into the right corner of the Cougar goal for the lead. At the 28 minute mark, a penalty in the Cougar box led to a Hastings penalty kick where they executed it successfully for the 2-0 advantage. With less than two minutes left in the half, sophomore Joey Spotanski scored his eighth goal of the season, second at the National Championships, 17 yards out to lead the Cougars in goals scored this season.

Both teams put their best game on the field staying strong defensively all the way through the final seconds of the match. Hastings outshot Columbia 12-10 with 7-5 being on-goal.

Ryan Harrisskitt had his final start on goal for the Cougars recording five saves.

This Cougar soccer team is the most successful one in Columbia history with a 23-1 record, remaining undefeated until today at the NAIA National Championship, the farthest Columbia has made it at the NAIA National Championships. Additionally, Columbia Head Coach John Klein was named American Midwest Conference Coach of the Year for the sixth time, while Senior Ryan Harrisskitt was named AMC Player of the Year with all 23 wins recording 72 saves on the season, and Carson Lindsey was named AMC Freshmen of the Year.
