McKenzie, Tenn. – This afternoon the Columbia College men's baseball team was back in action when they traveled to McKenzie, Tennessee, to kick off their 2019 campaign against Bethel (Tenn.) University. The Cougars split the doubleheader as the Wildcats took game one 5-4 and the Cougars won 11-4 in the second game.
In the first game against the Wildcats, Columbia College was able to get on the board first as
Ethan Howser hit a 3-run homerun in the top of the first to take an early 3-0 lead. The Wildcats responded with their own homerun in both the bottom of the second and the bottom of the sixth to make it a 3-2 game. The Cougars were then able to rally up another run at the top of the seventh to increase their lead. Bethel was able to build up some momentum in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game 4-4, and then finished the game adding another run to give the Cougars their first loss of the season.
Chris Wall (0-1) was on the mound for Columbia as he allowed just one hit and struck out eight batters in five innings of work.

Josiah Imhoff (0-0), and
Devon Still (0-0) came in to relieve Wall and allowed a combined four hits while striking out four batters in the final three innings. Offensively,
Ethan Howser led the way for Columbia as he went 1-2 with three RBI and two runs scored. In addition,
Joshua Miller went 1-3 with an RBI to round up the top performers for the Cougars.
In the second game of the doubleheader, Columbia and Bethel were both able to score a run to start the game tied 1-1 after the first inning. The Cougars then went on to score three more runs in the third inning to take the lead 4-1. The Wildcats answered with two runs of their own in the third to get back in the game. The Cougars came back strong in the fifth inning with six runs, including a grand slam by
Chase Urhahn to increase the Cougars score 10-3. The Wildcats did their best to get back into the game and were able to pick up one more run in the fifth, but the Cougars quickly responded with another run in the sixth to solidify their win against the Wildcats.
Jacob Ford (1-0) got the start for Columbia as he allowed three hits and two earned runs while striking out four in four innings.
Grant Starke (0-0) relieved Ford in the fifth inning and allowed three hits and struck out two batters in the final three innings.
Chase Urhahn led the way for the Cougars as he went 3-4 with four RBI and three runs scored. In addition,
Ethan Howser went 2-3 with three RBI and one run scored,
Nolan Rattai went 1-3 with two RBI and one run scored,
Bradley Prebay went 2-4 with an RBI and a run, and
Kenny Piper went 1-4 with one RBI and two runs scored.
The baseball team is back in action tomorrow, February 2
nd as they take on the Bethel Wildcats in another doubleheader with the first game beginning at 12 p.m. with the second game to follow.
