Columbia Takes Last Conference Game 67-48 over Spartans

Columbia, Mo. – Tonight the first ranked Columbia College women's basketball team traveled to St. Louis, Missouri to take on the Missouri Baptist University Spartans in their last AMC matchup of the season. Columbia defeated the Spartans 67-48. The Cougars improve to 27-3 on the season and finish conference play 21-3.

Columbia's last AMC regular season game was underway as they jumped to a 9-2 lead midway through the first. Columbia held control of the quarter as it progressed and led 18-5. The Spartans went on a run of their own late in the first making it 19-12 Cougars, after one quarter.

A minute and a half into the second quarter, the Spartans cut the game to five points, as Columbia took a quick timeout. Near midway through the second, Columbia took back a double digit lead, 24-14. As the game reached halftime the Cougars were able to hold a nine point lead, 29-20. In the first half Columbia shot 80 percent from the line, along with seven steals on 12 Spartans turnovers.

Within the first three minutes of the third quarter, the Spartans cut it to a two point deficit, 29-27. However, over the next two minutes the Cougars went on a run taking back a 10 point lead causing a Spartan timeout midway through the quarter. While the third played out, the Cougars kicked it up a notch and took a 54-31 lead heading into the final quarter. The Spartans did their best in the fourth quarter, but the Cougars were too much to handle as they remained on top. Columbia secured their final AMC regular season game by a score of 67-48.

Morgan Brandt had a double-double with 15 points, going 2-4 from three, and 12 rebounds, along with three assists. Jordan Alford also had 15 points, going 3-6 from three, with five rebounds. In addition, Ukari McKinney had 10 points and two boards and Ashlee Marlatt dished out 5 assists on the night.

The women's basketball team has concluded regular season play and will host their AMC Quarterfinal tournament game on February 27th at 7:00 p.m. in Southwell Complex.
