Cougar Softball goes 1-2 in World Series Preview

Chickasha, Oklahoma – The fourth ranked Columbia College softball team was back in action today as they traveled to Chickasha, Oklahoma to play a triple header in the World Series Preview presented by DoubleTree. They defeated Mount Marty College 4-2, fell to the second ranked University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma 8-1, and fell 10-2 to first ranked Oklahoma City University. Columbia is now 3-3 on the season.

In the first game of the day, they took on Mount Marty College. The Cougars took the early lead 1-0 after the first inning. The score remained 1-0 for the next three innings. In the fifth inning each team was able to get some offense rolling as Mount Marty scored three runs in the top of the inning taking a 2-1 lead, but the Cougars answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to take back the lead 4-2. The bottom of the fifth proved to be enough as Columbia held on to win 4-2.

Molly Carter was on the mound as she allowed eight hits, zero earned runs, and struck out six batters in seven innings of play. Offensively, Olivia Denslow went 2-2 with two RBIs, Molly Carter went 2-2 with one RBI, and Karolina Arbova was 1-2 with one run scored, Libby Marko also had two runs scored.    

In the second game of the day, they faced second ranked University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma. USAO took a 2-0 lead after one inning and added six more runs in the second. After two innings, USAO led 8-1 and the rest of the game would remain scoreless as the Cougars could not get anything going.

Lexi Dickerson started on the mound as she allowed four hits, three earned runs, and struck out one batter in 1.1 innings of play. Madison Ramsey relieved Dickerson, as she allowed five hits, two earned runs, and struck out three batters in 5.2 innings. Offensively, Natalie Dummitt was 1-2 with one run scored, Olivia Denslow was 1-4, and Jacey Meyer had the sole RBI of the game.

In the third and final game of the day, they took on first ranked Oklahoma City University. OCU cracked the scoreboard first with three runs in the second inning and went on to add two more in both the third and fourth, while the Cougars were still scoreless. In the fifth OCU put up three more runs, leading 10-0 midway through the inning. Columbia was finally able to get on the board with two runs, but that was as close as they would get as they fell 10-2.

Kaitlyn Nottelmann started the game as she allowed six hits, three earned runs, and struck out three batters in 2.1 innings. Lexi Dickerson came in for Nottelmann as she also allowed six hits and three earned runs, while striking out three batters as well. Offensively, Olivia Denslow went 1-1 with one run scored, Molly Carter was 1-3 with one run scored and one RBI, Allison Keen was 1-3 with one RBI, and Mackenzie Kasarda was 1-2.

The Cougars are back in action when they travel to Gulf Shores, Alabama to compete in the 2019 Gulf Shores Invitational March 1st – 3rd. They begin play on Friday, March 1st against eighth ranked University of Mobile at 2 p.m. and University of Rio Grande (Ohio) at 4:30 p.m.
