Cougars Take First Conference Series Over Mustangs

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Conway, Arkansas - This afternoon the Columbia College men's baseball team was back in action as they completed the series against Central Baptist (Arkansas) College. The Cougars swept the doubleheader against the Mustangs winning the first game 2-1, and game two 7-2. The Cougars are now 6-5 on the season and 2-1 in conference play.
 
In the first game against the Mustangs, both teams battled it out, but remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth. Central Baptist College was first to get on the board with a run scored. Columbia College was quick to respond by scoring two runs in the seventh to take the lead 2-1. The Cougars defense stayed strong in the final inning of the game as they were able to get the three outs against the first three batters to solidify their first win in AMC play.
 
Jacob Ford (1-1) got the start on the mound as he only allowed three hits while striking out seven batters in 6.0 innings of play. Conner Darnell relieved Ford in the seventh inning and was awarded a save as he did not allow any hits in the final inning of the game. Offensively, the Cougars were led by Justin Randle who had a hit and 2 RBI, and both Ethan Howser and Dalton Bealmer who each had a hit and a run scored.
 
In game two against the Mustangs, the Cougars got off to a great start by scoring three runs in the first, and another three in the second inning, including a two-run homerun by Kenny Piper to get the 6-0 lead. Columbia College was able to add one more run in the third to extend their lead 7-0. Central Baptist College was unable to respond until the seventh inning where they scored a run, and then again in the ninth. The Cougars were able to stop the Mustangs at just those two runs and took the game 7-2.
 
Grant Starke (1-0) got the start for the Cougars as he did not allow any earned runs and struck out a batter in 6.0 innings of work. Lane Threlkeld relieved Starke in the seventh and only allowed one hit and struck out a batter, while Reid Browning allowed three hits and struck out three batters in 2.2 innings. Offensively, the Cougars were led by Kenny Piper who went 3-5 while scoring two runs and had 3 RBI, Chase Urhahn had two hits while scoring two runs and had 2 RBI, and Blade McKee who had a hit and an RBI to round up the top performers for the Cougars.
 
The Cougars game on Wednesday February 27th against Peru State has been postponed. Make sure to check the schedule online later in the week to see when the Cougars will take the field next.
