Columbia, Mo. – This afternoon the second ranked Columbia College women's basketball team hit the hardwood in Southwell Complex to take on the Hannibal-LaGrange University Trojans in an AMC matchup. Columbia grabbed their 15th straight win by a score of 85-38. The Cougars improve to 24-2 on the season and 18-2 in conference play.
To get the game going, the Cougars went on a quick 5-0 run before the Trojans found their first bucket. The Trojans were hanging in there in the first though as they trailed by just three, 13-10. As Columbia took back a five point lead, the Trojans called the first timeout just under midway through the quarter. After the first, the Cougars were up 21-10.
Columbia's defense was causing trouble for the Trojans as they had just 12 points midway through the second. Meanwhile, the Cougars stretched their lead to over 20 as they led 33-12. Columbia was in total control as they went into the break leading 40-15. In the half, the Cougars were shooting 47 percent from the field and 88 percent from the line, while Morgan Brandt led all scorers with 11. Columbia also had eight steals on 11 Trojan turnovers.
In the third, the Cougars continued to communicate and push the ball up the floor. They held a commanding lead 54-21 with three minutes left in the quarter. Heading into the final quarter Columbia led 62-27. The Cougars were too much for the Trojans to handle as they took care of business to wrap up their week with an 85-38 victory over the Trojans. Columbia finished shooting 42 percent from the field, 37 from three, and 80 from the charity stripe, along with 13 assists and 11 steals.
Every Cougar cracked the scoring column this afternoon in the victory. Morgan Brandt recorded 16 points and five boards, Jordan Alford had 10 points and seven boards, Ashlee Marlatt and Hannah Sutton each had nine points, a season-high for Sutton, and Sarah Walters and Mai Nienhueser both had eight points, while grabbing five and six rebounds respectively, Walters tying her season-high in rebounds. Alexis Uffmann added six points and five boards, Bria Jones and Geena Stephens each had five points, while Stephens snagged five rebounds. To round up the Cougars, Skyler Beeson had four points and four rebounds, Raegan Wieser had three points and three assists, and Grey Hayes took it to the hole to grab herself a bucket.
In addition to a nice team win, Brandt also took over number one all-time in most career free-throws attempted as she now sits at 426.
The women's basketball team travels to Parkville, Missouri on Tuesday, February 12th when they take on the Park University Pirates in an AMC contest. The game will tip-off at 5:30 p.m.
