Box Score Joplin, Mo. – This evening the Columbia College baseball team was back in action as they traveled to Joplin, Missouri to take on the Harris-Stowe State (Mo.) University Hornets in the 2019 AMC Baseball Championships. The Cougars started the tournament strong as they defeated the Hornets 9-5, to improve to 27-19 on the season.
Columbia College was able to put together 15 hits in the game. The Hornets were first to get on the board as they hit a two-run homerun in the first. The Cougars responded with two runs of their own to tie the game at two. Senior
Ethan Howser came up to bat in the second inning ready to play as he hit a two-run homerun to give Columbia their first lead of the game. Harris-Stowe tallied up another run in the third.
Dalton Bealmer started the third inning with a triple and then scored on
Bradley Prebay's sacrifice bunt to give Columbia the two run lead once again. Howser stepped up to the plate and homered on the first pitch to extend the Cougars lead. Columbia kept their momentum going as they added another run in the fifth to make it a 7-3 game. Howser does it again in the sixth as he hit his third homerun of the game, his 8
th this season. Columbia followed that by adding another run before moving on to the seventh inning. In the top of the ninth, the Hornets fought to get back in the game as they added two runs, but the Cougars stopped them from adding anymore with a double play by
Nolan Rattai,
Blade McKee and Howser to end the game.
Reid Browning (4-1) started on the mound for the Cougars as he struck out four batters in 4.1 innings of play. Browning was relieved by
Josiah Imhoff (4-2),
Tanner Beatty,
Lane Threlkeld (1-0) and
Conner Darnell (3-2) as they only allowed a combined one earned run in the final 4.2 innings of the game. Offensively,
Ethan Howser led the way on the plate as he went 5-5 while scoring four runs with four RBI. In addition,
Dalton Bealmer had three hits while scoring a run and had one RBI, and
Joshua Miller had three hits while scoring a run and had one RBI to round out the top performers for the Cougars.
The baseball team is back in action tomorrow, May 2
nd when they continue play in the 2019 AMC Baseball Championships in Joplin, Missouri. The Cougars will take on either Missouri Baptist University or Lindenwood-Belleville (Ill.) University starting at 6:30 p.m.
