Shreveport, La. – The Columbia College baseball team was back in action today as they traveled to Shreveport, Louisiana to begin play in the NAIA National Championship Opening Round bracket. In game one of the opening round, the fourth seed Cougars took on the fifth seed York (Neb.) College Panthers. Columbia dropped the first game against the Panthers and have moved to the elimination bracket. Columbia is now 29-22 on the season.
The Panthers were first to get on the board as they scored two runs in the first inning. York then added another run in the third with a solo homerun. The Cougars weren't giving up yet as
Ethan Howser hit a two run homerun to cut the Panthers lead 3-2 in the fifth. York found some momentum in the sixth as they tallied up another three runs. Columbia responded by adding another run in the seventh as Howser hit to left field and
Joshua Miller scored. The Cougars then loaded up the bases with only one out in the inning.
Dalton Bealmer hit to left and Howser scored. Both
Justin Randle and
Blade McKee reached base on a walk, which scored both
Chase Urhahn and
Ward Mershon to tie the game at six. The Panthers got the lead back in the ninth as they hit a solo homerun. The Cougars fought to get back in the game, but the Panthers got the last three outs to hand Columbia the loss.
Reid Browning (3-1) was the starting pitcher for the Cougars as he stuck out two batters in 2.1 innings of play. Browning was relieved by
Josiah Imhoff (5-2),
Jordan Copeland (2-0),
Tanner Beatty (1-0), and
Conner Darnell (3-3) as they struck out a combined four batters in the final 6.2 innings of the game.
Ethan Howser led the way for the Cougars as he had two hits while scoring two runs and had three RBI. Additionally,
Dalton Bealmer had three hits and one RBI, and
Chase Urhahn had three hits and scored a run.
The Cougars will return to the field tomorrow to continue National Tournament Opening Round play when they take on the loser of the number two seed LSU Shreveport (La.) vs. number three seed Bellevue (Neb.) matchup. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
