Box Score Joplin, Mo. – This evening the second seed Columbia College baseball team resumed play in the 2019 AMC Baseball Championships as they took on the third seed Missouri Baptist University Spartans. The Cougars shutout the Spartans 7-0, to improve to 28-19 on the season.
The Cougars quickly jumped on the board in the first, taking a 1-0 lead. Then in the bottom of the second, Ethan Howser knocked a two-run homerun, his fourth of the tournament and ninth of the season, to put the Cougars up 3-0. As the game progressed, the Cougar defense was locked in, and Chris Wall commanded the mound as he had 10 strikeouts through five innings. In the bottom of the fifth Justin Randle doubled to center and Dalton Bealmer was able to score on a wild throw. A sac fly hit by Blade McKee allowed Randle to cross the plate giving the Cougars a 5-0 lead. Columbia was able to tally another run in the sixth to lead 6-0. In the top of the seventh Wall broke his career strikeouts record as he notched 13 in the game so far. The Cougars lead grew to 7-0 heading into the eighth. Columbia's defense continued to back up Wall with confidence as they went on to lock up the 7-0 victory.
Chris Wall had a phenomenal night on the mound pitching a no hitter through eight innings. He also set a new career record of 15 strikeouts in his one hit complete shutout. Offensively, Nolan Rattai, Chase Urhahn, Justin Randle, and Blade McKee each went 2-4 with one run scored and one RBI, Ethan Howser was 2-4 with one run scored and two RBIs, Dalton Bealmer was 1-4 with one run scored, Bradley Prebay was 2-4, and Joshua Miller was 1-3.
The baseball team continues AMC Tournament play tomorrow at 3 p.m. when they face number one seed Freed-Hardeman University. The game may be changed due to weather, for bracket updates click here.
