Columbia, Mo. - The No. 13-ranked Columbia College women's soccer team scored a pair of goals in the opening 10 minutes of play to pace the Cougars to a 3-1 victory over Missouri Baptist University Saturday in a battle of first-place teams in the American Midwest Conference. The win for Columbia was its seventh-straight over Missouri Baptist.
Isabella Govero scored a pair of goals for the Cougars, while
Jewel Morelan assisted on two of the three goals.
Columbia won its eighth-straight game to improve to 9-3-1 (4-0 AMC), while Missouri Baptist had its five-game win streak snapped and fell to 8-4-2 (4-1 AMC).
Macie Lucas scored in the sixth minute to give the Cougars a 1-0 advantage, and just four minutes later Govero found the back of the net to extend the advantage to 2-0. Morelan assisted on both goals to move into a tie for the team lead with five assists.
Madilynn Lombardo scored in the 17th minute for Missouri Baptist to cut the lead in half and ended a streak of 396 minutes without allowing a goal.
Govero added an insurance goal for the Cougars in the 86th minute after receiving a long pass from Moreland in the midfield, and then fired a left-footed shot from outside the 18.
Columbia dominated play outshooting Missouri Baptist 18-3 and had a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Kate Marshall played all 90 minutes in goal and made one save.
The Cougars play at Stephens College on Wednesday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m.
