Columbia, Mo. - The Columbia College women's basketball team played host to the Coyotes of Kansas Wesleyan University today inside Southwell Complex. After rolling through their first game of the season 104-14, the Cougars found tougher competition from the Coyotes.
Mallory Shetley led four Cougars in double-digit scoring with 13, while
Mackenzie Hess (12), Delaney Horstman (11), and
Abby Backes (10) all also scored in double-digits.
The Cougars shot 40% (26-65) from the field and 38.9% (7-18) from beyond the arc.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Cougars led the Coyotes in rebounds 49-47 as
Hannah Ferguson (9),
Mallory Shetley (9), and Delaney Horstman (8) led the Columbia effort.
Columbia took the lead in the first quarter and held on to it the entire game, leading at the end of the first 18-17 and then at halftime 22-15.
Kansas Wesleyan came into the second half energized and outscored the Cougars in the third (20-23) and fourth (16-18) quarters.
The Cougars came up with a big defensive stop at the end of the game and in doing so, held off the comeback attempt from the Coyotes to take the 76-73 win.
