Columbia, Mo. - The second-seeded and No. 16-ranked Columbia College men's soccer team limited seventh-seed Lyon College to just two shots on goal in a 3-0 quarterfinal win in the American Midwest Conference (AMC) Tournament Saturday at R. Marvin Owens Field.
The Cougars advance to the AMC Semifinals to host No. 3 seed Missouri Baptist University on Tuesday, Nov. 8 at 6 p.m.
Columbia won its eighth-straight game to improve to 12-3-3, while Lyon ended its season with a 3-13-3 mark. The Cougars have now won 12 or more games in eight-straight seasons under head coach
John Klein.
Erik Rajoy gave the Cougars an early 1-0 lead in the eighth minute after he scored on a free kick from just outside the 18.
Nick Brandt made it 2-0 in the 28th minute when he headed home a cross from
James McFarlane.
Just four minutes later, McFarlane scored his first goal of the year on a shot from 30 yards out that snuck over the head of Lyon goalkeeper Dan Huff.
Liam Gibbs (two saves, 78:40) and
William Reese (11:20) split time in goal and recorded the Cougars seventh shutout of the season. Columbia outshot Lyon 20-7 and had a 11-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Columbia leads the all-time series with Lyon, 10-3-3, and the Scots will compete in NCAA Division III as part of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference starting in the Fall of 2023.
