Box Score St. Louis, Mo. – The Columbia College women's basketball team limited host Missouri Baptist University to 32.4 percent shooting as the Cougars recorded a 67-59 American Midwest Conference win Saturday in St. Louis.
Columbia won its fourth-straight game to improve to 9-3 (5-1 AMC), while Missouri Baptist had its five-game win streak snapped and fell to 7-3 (4-1 AMC). Columbia leads the all-time series with Missouri Baptist 42-2.
Mallory Shetley led the Cougars with 16 points and nine rebounds, while
Lexi Miller (15),
Peyton Crowe (10) and
DeLaney Horstman (10 points, 11 rebounds) also scored in double figures. Columbia hit 26-of-28 from the foul line and outrebounded Missouri Baptist 56-39.
Missouri Baptist led 8-0 in the opening two minutes of play as the Cougars missed their first six shots from the field. Columbia inched back with a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to 12-9. The Cougars trailed 20-11 after one quarter, hitting just 4-of-17 from the field.
Columbia opened the second quarter with back-to-back threes from
Mackenzie Hess and
Abby Backes, then a bucket by
Hannah Ferguson trimmed the lead to 25-21 with 7:08 to play before half. The Cougars hit four of their first five shots from the field in the quarter.
Columbia ended the half on a 10-3 run and took its first lead of the half on a pair of free-throws by Horstman with 5.6 seconds left. The Cougars limited Missouri Baptist to 1-of-8 shooting to end the quarter and took a 31-30 lead to the locker room. Shetley led the Cougars with 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting,
A lay-up by Crowe with 4:12 to play in the third quarter pushed the advantage to 39-34 with 4:12 to play and force a MBU timeout. Crowe had six points in the third quarter as the Cougars limited Mo Bap to 20.0 percent (4-20) shooting and took a 45-41 lead to the fourth.
Miller sealed the victory with a three-pointer to extend the Cougar lead to their largest of the game at 56-45 with 2:45 to play. Miller had nine points in the fourth quarter.
Tionne Taylor led Missouri Baptist with 22 points on 7-of-24 shooting.
The Cougars host University of Saint Mary on Sunday, Jan. 1 at 2 p.m.
