Volleyball Goes 2-0, Avenges Early Season Loss

Ottawa, Kan. - The No. 25 ranked Columbia College volleyball team competed twice today in the OU Invitational hosted by Ottawa University. In their first match of the day, the Cougars took on the Spires of (RV) University of Saint Mary. Looking to avenge their 1-3 loss to the Spires earlier in the season, the Cougars were able to go the distance and pull out the 3-2 win in a tightly contested match. Later in the day, the Cougars faced the Falcons of Friends University and rolled quickly to a 3-0 sweep. With the two wins, Columbia brings its record to 7-7 heading into conference play next week. 

Game 1: Columbia defeated USM 3-2 (36-38, 18-25, 25-16, 25-18, 18-16)

The Cougars found themselves down 0-2 against the Spires. Determined to extend the match, Columbia's offense had the best set of the match, hitting .625% on 17 team kills on the way to a dominating 25-16 set win. In the fourth set, the Cougar defense held USM to below .200 hitting while putting down 16 kills with only error themselves. In the fifth and decisive set, the Cougars had match point at 14-13, but a kill from USM tied the score 14-14. Both teams traded points until a Spire service error followed by a kill from Beyza Bektasoglu earned the Cougars the fifth set win 18-16.

Four different Cougars finished with double-digit kills; Danielle Prior (10), Sude Gundogan (14), Beyza Bektasoglu (14), and Allana Capella (14). Luisa Ferreira dished out 60 assists while picking up 17 digs. Defensively, Ellie Rockers collected a team-high 21 digs, followed by Madgalena Bostal with 14. 

Game 2: Columbia defeated Friends 3-0 (25-13, 25-15, 25-15)

Columbia flexed its defensive prowess against the Falcons at they rolled to a quick sweep. The second set saw the Cougars put down 18 team kills with only three errors. Columbia held Friends to a negative hitting percentage in the third set. 

Sude Gundogan led the offensive effort for the Cougars with 11 kills, followed by Beyza Bektasoglu (7) and Allana Capella (7). Abby Massengill was a force at the net, putting down six kills on a .667 hitting percentage. In the libero jersey, Ellie Rockers had a match-high 12 digs.
