St. Louis, Mo. – Columbia College Women's Basketball traveled to Harris-Stowe State University for an early week American Midwest Conference contest against the Hornets. A huge fourth quarter from the Hornets was not enough as Columbia took the 55-50 win to improve to 12-3 overall and 7-1 in the AMC.
Peyton Crowe led the Cougars with 16 points, while
Abby Backes followed with eight points and six rebounds.
DeLaney Horstman contributed six points to go along with a team-high seven rebounds.
The Hornets started on top as they took a quick 9-2 lead after four minutes of play. A timeout from Harris-Stowe brought a lineup change from the Cougars. Out of the timeout, the Hornets kept the pressure on the Cougars as they extended their lead to 12-3.
Peyton Crowe looked to get things going for Columbia as she scored nine points in the first quarter to close the Hornets lead to 17-14 at the end of the first.
Abby Backes and
Hannah Ferguson scored quick and early for the Cougars in the second quarter as the Cougars trailed 19-21. A three-pointer from
Allison Stiers put the Cougars ahead by one, 22-21, before another three-pointer from
Abby Backes extended the lead to 25-21 for Columbia midway through the second quarter. More contributions from

DeLaney Horstman helped the Cougars pull ahead to lead at halftime, 33-25.
In the third quarter,
Mackenzie Hess scored the first four points for the Cougars as they led 37-28. From there, both teams traded points to a 45-32 lead for Columbia with 90-seconds to play in the quarter. Made free throws from the Cougars put them up at the end of the third quarter, 50-38.
Two quick made layups and a three-pointer from the Hornets gave them the early momentum in the fourth quarter as they now trailed 45-51. A physical contest that saw both teams trade possessions had the Cougars with a 55-47 lead midway through the fourth quarter. Both teams were scoreless through three minutes of play until a made free throw from Harris-Stowe made the score 55-48 with thirty-seven seconds to play. A made basket from the Hornets brought them to within five, 50-55, forcing a timeout from the Cougars. As time expired, Columbia claimed the 55-50 win over Harris-Stowe.
