Bourbonnais, Illinois - The No.14-ranked Columbia College Cougars got their fall season underway today as they traveled to the campus of Olivet Nazarene University for two games in the ONU Tournament. The Cougars rolled through both opponents to end the day 2-0.
Game One: Columbia defeated Calumet College of Saint Joseph, 3-0 (25-6, 25-7, 25-11)
The Cougars took early leads at 7-1 and then again at 14-3 behind tough serving from
Ana Oro and
Clara Gower. Kills from
Abby Massengill and
Allana Capella helped push the Cougars ahead to an 18-6 lead. At the service line,
Magdalena Bostal served six times in a row to close out the first set win, 25-6. The Cougars held the Crimson Wave to just two earned points of their own as Columbia had four errors in the opening set.
Set two seemed to be a repeat of the first set as the Cougars used more tough serving from
Ana Oro and
Luisa Ferreira to take a 14-2 lead. The Crimson Wave looked to get something going with back to back points, but it was short lived as a kill from
Allana Capella gave the ball back to the Cougars. Up 20-6, the Cougars used kills from
Allana Capella,
Abby Massengill,
Alayna Rooks, and
Sude Gundogan to take the second set, 25-7.
The Cougars continued to roll in set three as they charged out to another big lead, 14-5. From there, both teams traded points until a Crimson Wave put
Jordan Starkey on the service line, Starkey would serve the final three points of the game as she earned an ace that was followed by a kill from
Alayna Rooks and a kill from
Katerina Pappa, givng the third and final set to the Cougars, 25-11.

Game Two: Columbia defeated Governors State, 3-0 (25-16, 25-8, 25-8)
Columbia jumped ahead early against GSU, taking a 9-5 lead. Errors from the Cougars helped the Jaguars close the deficit, but two serving runs from
Allana Capella and
Magdalena Bostal put the Cougars back ahead 16-11. Up 18-16,
Ellie Rockers served seven times in a row to close out the first set, 25-16.
The second set saw more tough serving from Columbia in
Ana Oro and
Luisa Ferreira as they took a huge lead at 14-1. Kills from
Janae Johnson,
Agatha Emanuelle, and
Alayna Rooks helped push the Cougars to take the second set, 25-8.
The third set was another repeat as Columbia cruised to big leads at 14-3 and then again at 21-8.
Agatha Emanuelle served an ace and
Katerina Pappa and
Janae Johnson both had kills to close the third set and match, 25-8.
