Cougars and No. 22 CMU Battle to Draw

Fayette, Mo. - The No. 15-ranked Columbia College men's soccer team and No. 22 Central Methodist University battled to a 0-0 draw in a battle of top-25 teams Wednesday in Fayette, Mo.
 
Each team registered 11 shots, while the Cougars had an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.
 
Columbia dropped to 2-1-2 with the tie, while Central Methodist is 3-2-1.
 
Central Methodist, the 2018 NAIA National Champions, outshot Columbia 7-5 in the opening 45 minutes of play, with each team putting one shot on frame. The Cougars lone shot on goal came at 2:58 off the foot of Alex Murphy.
 
The Eagles had a scoring chance in the 56th minute, but Matheus Storck's shot inside the box was pushed out of bounds by Alejandro Moltó Muñoz. In the 67th minute, the Cougars forced a corner kick that resulted in a header from Rece Gilmore that went just over the crossbar. 
 
Munoz was off his line in the 72nd minute, but Koen Schimmel's shot went just wide left to keep the score locked at 0-0. In the 81st minute, Will Essner nearly won it for the Cougars but his shot was pushed out of bounds by CMU goalkeeper Niccolo Cabras.
 
Molto Munoz made three saves in his first career start in goal for the Cougars.
 
The Cougars host RV John Brown University on Monday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m.
 
NOTES: Columbia leads the all-time series 12-0-2 ... The Cougars are 1-0-1 this season against ranked teams.
