McPherson, KS - The Columbia College volleyball team ended their season today in the Opening Round of the NAIA National Tournament as the Cougars fell to the Bulldogs of McPherson College.
After making it to the quarterfinals of the NAIA National Tournament just one season ago, the Cougars were unable to repeat and end their season with a 23-13 mark.
After leading for much of the first set, the Cougars found themselves up late with a 22-20 lead. Kills from both teams tied the score at 24-24, but a Cougar service error gave set point back to the Bulldogs. The Cougars pushed a few points before
Allana Capella and
Sude Gundogan registered a block to earn set point, 26-25, but it was not enough as McPherson scored three in a row to take the first set, 28-26.
The second set saw the Bulldogs use a five-point scoring run to break an 11-11 tie. Trailing 16-11, Columbia was forced to call their second timeout of the set. Out of the timeout, the Bulldogs continued to extend their lead would win set two on a service ace, 25-18.
Both teams traded points early on in the third set before Columbia called their first timeout trailing 13-10, and then their second still trailing 19-13.
Sude Gundogan and
Allana Capella powered down multiple kills each, trying to gain some momentum, but another service ace from the Bulldogs closed out the match, 25-19.
