Miller and Backes Lead Cougars Past Oklahoma City

Box Score Columbia, Mo. – Lexi Miller scored 14 of her season-high 20 points on a career-six three threes to lead the Columbia College women's basketball team to a 63-55 win over Oklahoma City University Saturday in non-conference action at the Arena of Southwell Complex. 
 
Columbia improved to 6-0 with the win, while Oklahoma City dropped to 4-6. Columbia is off to a 6-0 start for the first time since the 2019-20 season.
 
Abby Backes filled up the stat sheet with a season-high 17 points, six rebounds and six assists, while Mallory Shetley added 11 points. Columbia had a season-high 16 assists and a season-low eight turnovers in the win.
 
Columbia hit its first three shots from the field and led 7-2 in the opening two minutes. Lexi Miller had the hot hand in the first quarter with eight points on a pair of threes as the Cougars led 21-13. Columbia shot 50.0 percent (9-18) from the field in the first quarter, and hit 3-of-6 from three-point range.
 
Lexi Miller canned her third three of the game to put the Cougars up double figures (24-14), but Columbia went ice cold from the field. Columbia missed seven-straight shots and did not score for over four minutes as Oklahoma City trimmed the lead to 26-19.
 
Oklahoma City finished the second quarter on an 11-3 run to trim the advantage to 29-25 at halftime. Lexi Miller led the Cougars with 14 points. Columbia hit just 3-of-18 from the field in the second quarter and 33.3 percent (12-36) in the opening half.
 
The Stars cut the lead to two (29-27), but Shetley drained a three to ignite a 12-3 run to the get lead back to double figures at 41-30. Shetley had seven third-quarter points as Columbia outscored Oklahoma City 18-15 to hold a 47-40 lead.
 
The Stars got the lead down to five, but Backes and Lexi Miller hit back-to-back threes to make it 55-42 with 6:15 to play.
 
Jerney Bennett had 15 points, 16 rebounds and seven blocks, while Amaya Gordon added 13 points, seven rebounds and four steals. The Stars shot 37.3 percent (21-58) in the loss.
 
The Cougars return to AMC play by hosting Crowley's Ridge College on Thursday, December 5 at 5:30 p.m. as part of Faculty Appreciation Night.
 
NOTES: Columbia and Oklahoma City have split four all-time meetings ... Mya Miller had six points and seven rebounds in her first career start ... Tori Rubel had a team-high nine rebounds, one shy off her career high.
