Mya Miller recorded her second career double-double with 12 points and a career-best 13 rebounds to lead the Columbia College women's basketball team to a 58-49 win at Friends University Tuesday in Wichita.
Mallory Shetley (16 points) and
Lexi Miller (13) also scored in double figures for Columbia, which outrebounded Friends 54-34 and limited the Falcons to 32.7 (18-55) percent shooting from the field and a season-low one three-point field goal.
Columbia improved to 11-0 win the victory, while Friends had its two-game win streak snapped and fell to 7-6. The Cougars are off to a 11-0 start for the first time since the 2015-16 season.
Columbia missed its first five shots and trailed 4-0 in the opening two minutes of play, but rallied with eight-straight points to make it 8-4. Shetley had eight points in the first quarter as Columbia held a slim 15-12 lead, scoring 10 of 15 points in the paint.
The Cougars opened the second quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 21-12 advantage as Friends missed its first seven shots from the field. Columbia and Friends each scored 12 points in the second quarter.
Mya Miler had nine points and Shetley added eight as Columbia led 27-24 at half. The Cougars limited Friends to 30.8 percent (8-24) shooting in the first half.
Friends cut the lead to one on two occasions, but a three-pointer by
Lexi Miller from the corner gave Columbia a 34-30 lead with 7:34 left in the third. The Cougars outscored the Falcons 16-14 in the quarter and led 43-38.
Abby Backes canned a wing three to open the fourth quarter to push the lead to 46-38, and then a three-pointer by
Lexi Miller made it 54-43 with 3:03 left.
Lauryn McIver (11 points), Rayland Garner (10) and Taylor Jackson (10) scored in double figures for Friends.
Columbia hosts NCAA Division III Blackburn College on Thursday, Dec. 19 at Noon as part of School Day in Southwell.
