Softball Grabs Two Wins at Gulf Shores Invitational

GULF SHORES, Ala. - The Columbia College softball team traveled to Gulf Shores, Ala. to compete in the Gulf Shores Invitational. In their first matchup of the day, Columbia took on Morningside (Iowa), earning a win in walk-off fashion in eight innings, 7-6. In game two, the Cougars took on the Firehawks of Tennessee Southern achieving a 4-3 victory.

  • A sacrifice fly by Madysen Lucas brought in Suzanna Shanks to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh
  • The Mustangs gathered three runs in the top of the eighth, but the Cougars answered with four
  • Madysen Lucas had two key plate appearances, driving in two runs
  • Wendy van Wijk went 3-for-4 on the day with one RBI
  • Ella Schouten struck out five in 6.1 innings pitched
  • Kathryn Guinn earned the win in 1.2 innings pitched with one strikeout

  • Columbia scored an unearned run after an error from the first baseman
  • The Cougars notched eight hits to the Firehawks nine

The Cougars will continue action in the Gulf Shores Invitational tomorrow, March 3, taking on No.3-ranked University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) and Louisiana State Alexandria at 9:00 a.m. and 11:15 a.m.
