New Orleans, LA - The seventh-ranked Cougars of Columbia College kicked off play in the Big Easy Blastoff with a matchup against tournament hosts, (RV) Xavier University (XULA).
With the win, the Cougars improved to 3-3 while XULA falls to 1-4. Columbia will be back in action tomorrow for game two of the tournament as they take on (RV) Marian University.
After dropping the first set, Columbia rebounded to take sets two and three to lead the match 2-1. XULA hit a game-high .314% in the fourth en route to a fourth set win to tie the match at 2-2.
In the fifth set, Columbia jumped out to a 4-0 lead behind the tough serving of
Aubrey Kohl, forcing a quick timeout from XULA.
The Cougars continued to roll as they used kills from
Allana Capella and
Alayna Rooks combined with multiple errors from XULA, taking another big lead at 12-4 before the hosts called their second timeout.
From there, kills from
Agatha Emanuelle and
Katerina Pappa brought on match point, which was earned with a service ace from
Aubrey Kohl.
