Mya Miller drained a pair of free-throws with 1.7 seconds left to lift the Columbia College women's basketball team to a come-from-behind 69-67 victory at Stephens College Saturday at Silverthorne Arena in Columbia.
Mallory Shetley recorded a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while
Abby Backes had 11 of her 16 points in the first half and Miller had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Columbia shot 43.4 percent (23-53) from the field in the win and outrebounded Stephens 47-39. The Cougars committed a season-high 19 turnovers.
Columbia improved to 14-0 (8-0 AMC) with the win, while Stephens fell to 7-7 (4-4 AMC).
A back and forth first quarter saw Stephens hold a 20-14 lead after 10 minutes. The Stars scored the final nine points of the quarter as Columbia was held without a field goal for 3:32.
Columbia got within two (20-18) after scoring the first four points of the second quarter, but an 11-4 run by the Stars pushed the lead to 31-22 with 4:53 to play before half.
Stephens led 38-35 at the break as Backes (11), Shetley (10) and
Lexi Miller (7) combined to score 28 of the 35 first-half points for the Cougars. Columbia shot 48.1 percent (13-27) from the field, but had nine turnovers.
The Cougars got the lead down to one (44-43) on a bucket by Rubel, and then tied the contest at 46-46 with 3:42 left in the third on a lay-up by
Lauren Friedrich. Columbia hit 8-of-13 from the field in the third quarter and led 55-50 after scoring the final five points of the quarter.
Ashtyn Klusmeyer hit a corner three with 21 seconds left for the Cougars.
Columbia locked down on defense forcing Stephens into six straight misses as the Cougars led 62-59 with 3:37 to play on a bucket by Shetley. With Columbia leading by two with two seconds left, Chu Crockett put back her own miss to tie the game at 67-67.
Crockett had a game-high 26 points and 15 rebounds in just her second game of the year, while LaiJanique Perry-Ellis added 13 points on 6-of-20 shooting. The Stars hit just 6-of-20 threes and 13-of-25 free-throws in the loss.
The Cougars host Central Baptist College on Thursday, January 16 at 5:30 p.m. as part of International Student Night.
