Cougars' Win Streak Snapped by Mission

Columbia, Mo. – The Columbia College women's basketball team had its 40-game home winning streak snapped and suffered its first loss of the season in a 75-70 defeat to Mission University Saturday at the Arena of Southwell Complex.
 
Mission improved to 13-4 (10-3 AMC) with the win, while Columbia suffered its first loss of the season and fell to 18-1 (12-1 AMC). The loss also snapped the Cougars' 18-game conference winning streak dating back to last year.
 
Mallory Shetley hit back-to-back buckets to put the Cougars up 70-69 with 1:44 to play, but Columbia missed its final five shots from the field. Heaven Shockley's jumper with 44 seconds left put Mission up for good.
 
Mya Miller and Shetley each scored 14 points to lead the Cougars, while Ashtyn Klusmeyer scored in double-figures for the third-straight game off the bench with 13 points. Tori Rubel recorded the second double-double of her career with 12 points and 12 rebounds for Columbia, which hit 16-of-16 free-throws in the defeat.
 
Columbia dominated the paint early in the game and led 8-3, but Mission responded with a 9-0 run to grab the 12-8 advantage. Shetley had six points in the first quarter as Columbia clung to a 21-19 lead. Mission was 4-of-6 from three-point range in the opening quarter.
 
The Cougars opened the second quarter on a 7-2 run to extend the lead to 28-21, but went cold from the field missing six of seven shots and Mission closed the gap to 30-27. 
 
Columbia held a 37-33 lead at half after limiting Mission to 37.1 percent (13-35) shooting from the field. Klusmeyer led a balanced attack in the first half with seven points, as five Cougars had five or more points.
 
Columbia scored six-straight points to extend its lead to 45-39, but Mission responded with a 9-0 run to take the 48-45 lead with 3:48 left in the third. The Cougars missed eight-straight shots in a span of over three minutes.
 
Lauren Friedrich's three-point play knotted the score at 48-48, and then a pair of free-throws by Miller and a fast-break lay-up by Klusmeyer at the buzzer gave the Cougars a 54-50 lead after three quarters.
 
Mission scored eight-straight points to tie the game at 58-58, and took a 65-62 lead with less than four minutes left after a three-pointer by Ireland Jones.
 
Cassidy Hambelton (28 points, seven assists), Shockley (17 points) and Josie Sullivan (11 points, six rebounds) scored in double figures for Mission, which shot 44.4 percent (28-63) from the field in the win. 
 
The Cougars open a two-game road trip at (RV) Williams Baptist University on Thursday, January 30 at 5:30 p.m. in Walnut Ridge, Ark. 
 
NOTES: Columbia has split a pair of all-time meetings with Mission ... The game was tied seven times and had 11 lead changes ... The Cougars had a 19-9 advantage in bench points.
