Lexi Miller poured in a career-high 30 points, and the Columbia College women's basketball team remained unbeaten (6-0) with an 80-64 road victory over the University of Saint Mary (5-3) on Monday night at Ryan Sports Center in Leavenworth, Kansas.
Three Cougars scored in double figures: Lexi Miller (30), Ashtyn Klusmeyer (16), and Tori Rubel (12). Columbia shot 41.8 percent (28-67) from the field, including 36.4 percent (12-33) from three-point range, and dominated the boards 45-21. The Cougars also dished out 20 assists while forcing 15 turnovers, converting them into 13 points.
Columbia found itself in an early hole, falling behind 8-3 after Saint Mary's Addison Tower drilled back-to-back three-pointers in the opening three minutes. But Lexi Miller responded with a three-pointer, and Lexi Rubel followed with another to tie the game 6-8. Klusmeyer then scored five straight points, including a three-pointer and a layup, to give the Cougars their first lead at 11-11.
The teams traded baskets throughout the remainder of the opening quarter, and Saint Mary took a 22-19 lead into the second period. Tower led all scorers with six points in the quarter, while Abby Wendte added 11 for the Spires. Columbia shot 47.1 percent (8-17) from the field in the opening frame.
Lexi Miller caught fire in the second quarter, scoring 10 points to spark a 20-13 Cougar advantage in the period. A three-pointer by Miller gave Columbia a 30-29 lead, and Tori Rubel's three-pointer at 1:57 put the Cougars ahead 36-35. Lexi Miller capped the quarter with another three-pointer, and Columbia took a 39-35 lead into halftime.
The Cougars exploded out of the locker room, opening the third quarter on a 14-0 run to seize control of the game. Klusmeyer started the surge with a layup, followed by a Tori Rubel three-pointer. Lexi Miller then knocked down back-to-back three-pointers, pushing the lead to 53-37 with 6:23 left in the quarter. Columbia held Saint Mary to just 17.6 percent shooting (3-17) in the third, including 0-for-6 from three-point range, and took a commanding 64-44 lead into the fourth.
The lead grew to 22 points (67-46) early in the final quarter on a Klusmeyer three-pointer. Saint Mary made a late push behind Tower, who scored 11 of her game-high 25 points in the fourth quarter, but the Cougars maintained control throughout. Klusmeyer added nine points in the quarter to help seal the victory.
For Columbia, Lexi Rubel finished with nine points and 13 rebounds, Tori Rubel added 12 points and nine rebounds, and Mya Miller contributed eight points and five rebounds. The Cougars shot 75.0 percent (12-16) from the free-throw line and outscored Saint Mary 22-18 in the paint.
