Ashtyn Klusmeyer scored a team-high 20 points on 10-of-14 shooting to lead the Columbia College women's basketball team to a 75-50 win at William Woods University Monday in Fulton, Mo.
Columbia improved to 11-0 with the win, while William Woods dropped to 2-9. The Cougars are off to their first 11-0 start since the 2015-16 season, when they opened the year 19-0.
Mya Miller and
Lexi Rubel each scored 12 points, while
Lexi Miller contributed nine points and pulled down 10 rebounds. The Cougars shot a season-high 53.6 percent from the field (30-of-56) and controlled the glass with a 50-25 rebounding advantage, also dominating the paint 36-10 in the win.
A 9-0 run midway through the first quarter gave Columbia an early 13-4 advantage. The lead grew to 21-7 after the Cougars scored the final eight points of the quarter, highlighted by
Lexi Rubel's three-point play and a three-pointer from
Lauren Friedrich.
Columbia held William Woods to just 3-of-18 shooting (18.8 percent) in the quarter. Klusmeyer led the Cougars with six points as Columbia went 8-of-14 from the field.
Klusmeyer stayed hot in the second quarter, scoring eight points as Columbia extended its lead to 39-21 at halftime. She finished the opening half with a game-high 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting. The Cougars controlled the paint, outscoring the Owls 22-6, and held William Woods to just 7-of-31 shooting (22.6 percent) in the first half.
Lexi Rubel's three-pointer pushed the advantage to 20 at 44-24, and
Lexi Miller followed with her first triple of the contest to extend the lead to 51-29.
Alli Robertson then drilled a deep wing three as time expired, sending the Cougars into the fourth quarter with a 56-38 lead. Each team scored 17 points in the period.
Columbia put the game out of reach with an 8-0 run early in the final quarter to extend the advantage to 64-40.
Jersee Wren (23 points) and Mya Pflasterer (14) scored in double figures for William Woods, which was limited to 29.0 percent shooting (18-62) from the field in the loss.
The Cougars have 15 days off before hosting Friends University on Wednesday, December 31 at 1 p.m.
NOTES: Columbia has won 11-straight meetings against William Woods and leads the all-time series 45-11 … Klusmeyer has scored 20 or more points six times this season.
