Cougars Celebrate Seniors in Win Over Missouri Baptist

Columbia, MO – The Columbia College women's basketball team wrapped up the regular season today as they played host to the Spartans of Missouri Baptist University.

Before the game, Columbia recognized their three seniors in Abby Backes, Mallory Shetley, and DeLaney Horstman for their contributions to the program.

After beating the Spartans on the road earlier this season, the Cougars earned the season series sweep with a dominating performance today.

The Cougars now look to the American Midwest Conference tournament in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas. Columbia has earned the #2-seed and will take on the #7-seed in the quarterfinals on Friday, February 28th, at 12:00PM.

Columbia jumped out to a quick 29-6 lead after the first quarter as Mallory Shetley notched 12 of her game-high 25 points, going 4-6 from the field to start the game.

Through two periods of play, Columbia held Missouri Baptist to just 19 team points on 6-23 shooting from the field. The Cougar defense forced nine first half turnovers as the Spartans continued to struggle offensively.

Columbia kept up the offensive pressure and outscored the Spartans again in the third quarter, 13-6, taking a 64-25 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Cougars ran the floor well and used fast break points from Lexi Miller, Abby Backes, and Ashtyn Klusmeyer to extend their lead. As time expired, Mara Jensen and Emma Daniels registered the last points for the Cougars as they played to an 83-32 win.

Mallory Shetley registered a game-high 25 points to go along with seven rebounds and three blocks. Freshman Ashytn Klusmeyer continued her standout first season as she followed with 20 points on 8-12 shooting.

Lexi Miller and Abby Backes were both in double-digits, finishing with 12 points each as Miller also had seven rebounds and Backes totaled six.
