Collin Parker Scores 2,000th Point in Loss to William Woods

Columbia, Mo. – The Columbia College men's basketball team could not overcome a cold stretch midway through the second half in an 87-80 loss to No. 14-ranked William Woods University Thursday at the Arena of Southwell Complex.
 
Down by five with less than 10 minutes left, William Woods went on a 14-0 run and did not look back in recording its 16th-straight win. The game was tied nine times and there was 12 lead changes.
 
Collin Parker scored 17 points and netted the 2,000th point of his career with a three-pointer with 15:35 left in the second half. Parker, the Columbia College men's basketball all-time leading scorer with 2,003 points, added 11 rebounds to go over 800 for his career.
 
Harrison Vickers scored a team-high 18 points and Kai Steinman added 16 points, five assists and five rebounds for Columbia, which shot 45.6 percent (26-57) from the field in the loss.
 
William Woods improved to 21-2 (13-1 AMC) with the win, while Columbia had its six-game win streak snapped and fell to 18-6 (11-3 AMC).
 
William Woods connected of 7-of-10 from the field to start the contest as the Owls led 15-10 in the opening seven minutes. Tommy Hafer's wing three with the shot clock nearing zero cut the deficit to 19-16, but an 8-0 run by the Owls got the lead up to double figures (27-16).
 
Back-to-back threes from Vickers and Parker highlighted an 11-3 run for the Cougars as the deficit was down to four (33-29) with less than four minutes to play.
 
William Woods took a slim 42-38 lead to halftime as both teams shot over 50 percent from the field. Parker and Vickers had 11 points each to lead Columbia.
 
Steinman's four-point play gave the Cougars the 46-45 advantage, and then his second three of the half made it 51-50 with 16:46 left. A wing three-pointer from Parker ignited a 7-0 run as Columbia took its largest lead of the game at 58-53.
 
The Cougars missed eight-straight shots from the field and William Woods answered with a 14-0 run to regain the lead for good at 78-69 with 5:52 to play. Columbia got the lead down to three (78-75) with 3:52 to play, but three-pointers by Kevin Taylor and Francis Okwuosah sealed the victory for the Owls.
 
Okwuosah led William Woods with a game-high 24 points on four three-pointers, while Henry Shannon III (14 points, nine rebounds), D'Mari Wiltz (12 points, eight assists), Nate Schwartze (11 points) and Taylor (10 points) scored in double figures. The Owls had a 19-9 advantage in points off turnovers.
 
The Cougars have the weekend off before traveling to UHSP on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
 
NOTES: Columbia leads the all-time series with William Woods 30-10, but was swept in the two regular-season games ... Carson Parker had eight points and moved into 24th on the all-time scoring list (1,058 points).
