Columbia, Mo. – The Columbia College women's basketball team secured its 20th win of the season with an 84-48 victory over William Woods University Thursday at the Arena of Southwell Complex.
The Cougars limited William Woods to season-low 23.1 percent (15-65) shooting from the field, including 4-of-24 from three-point range. Columbia's defense forced the Owls to 22-straight misses in a span of over 10 minutes in the second and third quarter.
Mallory Shetley had a game-high 24 points for Columbia, while
Mya Miller recorded her fifth double-double of the season with a career-high 23 points and 13 rebounds on 10-of-13 shooting.
Tori Rubel added nine points and 10 rebounds for Columbia, who shot 49.3 percent (35-71) from the field in the win and outrebounded William Woods 53-38.
Columbia won its second-straight contest to improve to 20-2 (14-2 AMC), while William Woods had its two-game win streak snapped and fell to 9-13 (7-9). The Cougars have won 20 or more games in four-straight seasons and for the 20th time in program history.
Columbia hit nine of its first 10 shots from the field and led 19-4 in the opening six minutes of play. Shetley had 11 of the first 19 points for the Cougars on 5-of-5 shooting. William Woods ended the first quarter on a 7-2 run to trim the CC lead to 21-11 as the Cougars missed their final five shots from the field.
Miller had eight of the first 10 points for CC in the second quarter as the lead grew to 31-15. Columbia scored the final 11 points of the second quarter and forced 17-straight misses as the Cougars took a commanding 42-17 lead at half.
Miller recorded 19 points on 8-of-8 shooting and 10 rebounds in the first half to lead the Cougars, while Shetley added 14 points. Columbia limited William Woods to 16.1 percent (5-31) shooting in the first half, and did not allow a three-point field goal.
Rubel canned her shot from beyond the arc to get the lead to 30 (51-21), and then her third three-pointer pushed the advantage to 61-27. Columbia hit 4-of-7 from three-point in the third quarter to take a 66-33 lead.
Peyton Dearing had 14 of her team-high 16 points in the second half, while Sydney Booker added a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The Cougars host Cottey College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
NOTES: Columbia has won nine-straight contests against William Woods and leads the all-time series 42-12 ... The Cougars have scored 80 or more points nine times this season.
