Cougars Fall in Opening Round to #25 Lewis-Clark State

Sioux City, Iowa – Senior Mallory Shetley scored a game-high 25 points but it was not enough as the No. 11 seed Columbia College women's basketball team suffered a 75-59 loss to No. 6 seed and #25 Lewis-Clark State College Friday in the opening round of the 2025 NAIA National Tournament in Sioux City, Iowa.
 
Lewis-Clark State improved to 26-6 with the win, while Columbia had its five-game win streak snapped and ended its season with a 28-4 record.
 
The Warriors take on No. 3 seed and fifth-ranked Briar Cliff University on Saturday, March 15 at 4 p.m. in the NAIA second round.
 
Tori Rubel had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Lexi Miller added nine points. Columbia shot 40.0 percent (22-55) from the field and hit just 7-of-21 from three-point range.
 
Columbia took its first lead of the contest (7-6) with a jumper by Shetley, but the Warriors scored 10-straight points to take the 16-7 advantage. Abby Backes' second three of the game ended the run for Lewis & Clark and trimmed the deficit to 16-10.
 
The Cougars trailed 22-12 after the first quarter as Columbia had five turnovers and hit just 5-of-13 from the field. Backes and Shetley each had six points.
 
Columbia opened the second quarter on an 8-2 run to cut the lead to four (24-20), highlighted by three-pointers by Rubel and Miller. The Warriors scored nine-straight points to take a commanding  41-25 with 1:10 left before half.
 
Lewis and Clark State led 43-29 at half after limiting the Cougars to 36.7 percent (11-30) shooting from the field with eight turnovers. Shetley had 10 points to lead the Cougars.
 
The Warriors took their largest lead of the game at 47-29 with 8:07 left in the third quarter, but the Cougars would not fold. Shetley scored seven points to highlight a 14-2 run as Columbia trimmed the deficit to 49-43.
 
Shetley scored 11 points in the quarter but the Cougars trailed 60-48 heading to the fourth.
 
The Warriors got the lead back to 16 (70-54) with 5:06 to play after a 7-2 run.
 
Darian Herring and Payton Hyman led Lewis-Clark State with 21 points each, while Ellie Sander (11) and Mataya Green (10) also scored in double figures. The Warriors shot 50.8 percent (33-65) from the field in the win and had a 54-22 advantage in points in the paint.
 
NOTES: Columbia and Lewis & Clark State met with the first time since 2007 and for the second time in school history ... The Cougars made their 20th all-time appearance in the NAIA Tournament ... The double-double for Rubel was her fourth of the season .. Shetley finished her career as the program's all-time leading scorer with 2,197 points.
