Columbia, Mo. – The No. 16-ranked Columbia College men's basketball team limited Harris-Stowe State University to a season-low 33.3 percent shooting from the field in a 93-61 victory on Saturday at the Arena of Southwell Complex.
Justin Boyer scored a career-high 21 points on 7-of-9 shooting with nine rebounds, while
Johnny Anderson had the third double-double of his career with 18 points and 14 rebounds.
Marcelous Phillips added a career-best 16 points on 7-of-7 shooting with three dunks and
Caleb Jones had 12 second-half points with four steals.
The Cougars shot 48.3 percent (29-of-60) from the field and hit 28-of-32 from the free-throw line in the win. The 28 free-throws made was second most this season for CC.
Columbia won its second-straight game to improve to 21-3 and 9-1 in the American Midwest Conference (AMC), while Harris-Stowe dropped it fourth-straight contest and is 4-18 overall and 1-10 in the AMC.
Boyer, making his second career start, scored eight of the first 12 points and gave the Cougars a 12-8 lead with 11:17 left in the first half on a conventional three-point play.
Jace Eskew canned a pair of threes to highlight a 15-2 run as the CC lead grew to double figures at 31-13. Philips had a pair of two-handed dunks during the surge. He canned a wing three to push the lead to 36-16.
Harris-Stowe was limited to two field goals over the final 9:54 as the Cougars took a 42-22 lead into the break. Columbia held the Hornets to 25.0 percent shooting (7-of-28) and dominated points in the paint, 24-12. Phillips led the Cougars with 13 points, including nine in a row in a 2:32 span.
Anderson's three-point play highlighted a 6-0 run as the CC lead grew to 57-33 with 13:57 to play. Columbia went 1-of-8 from the field as Harris-Stowe trimmed the deficit to 70-52, but that is as close as the Hornets would get.
Dimitrije Stojanovic (13) scored in double figures for Harris-Stowe, which hit just 2-of-15 from three-point range in the loss.
The Cougars host UHSP on Tuesday, February 10 at 7:30 p.m.
