LIBERTY, Mo. - The Columbia College men's lacrosse team dropped a 13-4 decision to NCAA Division II William Jewell College (Mo.) on Wednesday at Jewell SOC/LAX Field. Play was suspended in the fourth quarter due to severe weather. The Cougars move to 3-3 on the season.
William Jewell wasted no time, scoring six unanswered goals before Brock Pleis got Columbia on the board at the 9:48 mark, finishing off a feed from Drake Morrissey. The Cardinals added another before the quarter closed, taking a 6-1 lead into the second.
The second quarter saw William Jewell continue to pull away, outscoring the Cougars 4-1 to push the lead to 10-2. William Rusk provided a bright spot for Columbia, finding the back of the net, but the Cardinals capitalized on three Cougar penalties to score a pair of man-up goals and close the half on a strong note.
Columbia showed resilience in the third quarter, outscoring William Jewell 2-1. Pleis struck again off a feed from Will Rivenburgh, before Kai Garriock added a goal just 41 seconds later. The Cardinals' Nathaniel Leroux halted the run, however, sending the Cougars into the fourth trailing 10-4.
William Jewell added three more goals in the fourth before severe weather brought an early end to the contest, finalizing the 13-4 score.
Pleis led Columbia with two goals, while Rusk and Garriock each added one. Morrissey and Rivenburgh each recorded an assist. In goal, Andrew Stapf turned in a strong effort with 16 saves. Columbia returns to action in their next scheduled contest.
Columbia returns to action at home on March 14th at 6:00 p.m. against Midland University (Neb.).
