NEVADA, Mo. - The Columbia College softball team split a road American Midwest Conference (AMC) doubleheader at Cottey College (Mo.) this afternoon. The Cougars earned a 2-0 victory to open the day, falling to the Comets in game two 3-2. Columbia moves to 20-12 overall and 10-4 in AMC play.

Game One: Columbia College def. Cottey College, 2-0

  • Ella Schouten (W, 9-5): 7.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 11 SO
  • Kennedy Schanuth provided all the offense Columbia needed in the first inning, lacing a two-run double to score Taryn Hagardt and Wriley Taylor and give the Cougars an early 2-0 lead
  • Schouten was dominant from start to finish, striking out 11 batters and scattering four hits while never allowing Cottey to seriously threaten
  • Cottey's best opportunity came in the sixth when they put two runners on base, but Schouten stranded both to preserve the shutout
  • Schanuth finished 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Taylor went 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored

  • Cottey jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a solo home run
  • Columbia answered in the second when Cassidy Avery doubled home Kennedy Schanuth to make it 2-1, and pulled within one in the third on an RBI sacrifice fly by Rosalie Schneider that scored Eleanor Schudel
  • The Cougars had chances late, stranding three runners in the fourth and three more in the fifth, but could not push the tying run across
  • Avery finished 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI to pace the Columbia offense
