ST. LOUIS, MO – Dylan Carlton and Joey Marcinkiewicz each launched solo home runs, but a six-run seventh inning by the host Spartans proved too much to overcome as Columbia College dropped a 9-2 road decision to No. 7-ranked Missouri Baptist University on Tuesday afternoon at Spartan Field. The Cougars fall to 25-10-1 overall.
Marcinkiewicz was the offensive catalyst for the Cougars, going 3-for-4 on the afternoon with a double and a home run. Carlton provided the other run with a leadoff shot to left in the sixth. Columbia collected eight hits total but was unable to string together rallies against Missouri Baptist starter Joseph Giunta, who worked six strong innings to earn the win and improve to 3-0 on the season. Giunta scattered five hits and struck out four without issuing a walk.
Noah Gadberry got the start for Columbia and turned in two scoreless innings before trouble arrived in the third. Gadberry was tagged with the loss and falls to 0-1 on the year. Jackson Forck, Hayden Wilson, Stetson Marion, Hunter Hees, and Aiden Strickland all saw time in relief, with Aiden Strickland closing things out with a clean final frame. The Spartan offense tagged Columbia's bullpen for eight earned runs over the final six innings.
Missouri Baptist struck first in the bottom of the first when Carlos Hidalgo reached on an error and came around to score on a Nick Beech groundout, putting the Spartans up 1-0. Hidalgo added to the lead in the third with a solo home run to left center, pushing the margin to 2-0.
The Cougars finally got on the board in the sixth when Carlton connected on a 0-0 pitch and drove it out to left field for his solo shot, cutting the deficit to 2-1. Missouri Baptist answered immediately in the bottom half when Kai Gray singled, stole second, and came home on a Sam Paule single to center to restore the two-run lead at 3-1.
Marcinkiewicz knotted things at 3-2 in the seventh with a leadoff homer, but the Spartans responded in a big way in the bottom half. Jackson Wells had come on in relief and surrendered the Marcinkiewicz blast, then the MBU offense did the damage against the Columbia bullpen. Jayden Orozco singled and Beech followed with a two-run shot down the left-field line to put the Spartans back in front 5-2. After a stolen base and a fielder's choice, Kevin Watkins doubled down the left-field line to score Jason Moss and push it to 6-2. Sam Paule capped the inning with a three-run homer to left center, his second RBI hit of the game, to put the game out of reach at 9-2. The Spartans sent ten batters to the plate in the frame.
Missouri Baptist finishes with 15 hits on the night, with Kai Gray going 4-for-5 and Marcus Graham adding three doubles. Paule drove in four runs while Beech had three RBI. JD Whitter struck out the side in a clean ninth inning to close it out for the Spartan bullpen.
