COLUMBIA, Mo. — On a windy Senior Day at Battle High School, the Columbia College softball team swept a home American Midwest Conference (AMC) doubleheader against the Mission University Patriots, winning 11-0 in five innings in the opener before holding on for a 4-2 victory in the nightcap. The Cougars improve to 23-13 overall and 13-5 in conference play with the twinbill sweep.
Before first pitch, Columbia honored five seniors: Abigail Zismer, Kennedy Jensen, Micaiah Cordell, Sophia Angel, and Cassidy Avery. All five contributed on the field throughout the afternoon.
Game One: Columbia def. Mission, 11-0
- Ella Schouten (W, 11-5): 3.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO; Kennedy Jensen: 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO — the duo combined for a five-inning shutout, with Mission failing to record a single hit on the afternoon
- Abigail Zismer was the offensive catalyst, going a perfect 4-for-4 with a double, three runs scored, and an RBI, reaching base in all four plate appearances
- Columbia wasted no time in the first, with Taryn Hagardt laying down a sacrifice bunt to move Zismer into scoring position before Rosalie Schneider doubled to right-center to score her; Cassidy Avery followed with a sacrifice fly to center that plated Schneider for a 2-0 lead
- The Cougars erupted for five runs in the second inning — Kylee Page reached on an error and scored on an Eleanor Schudel single, Zismer doubled to right-center to set the table, Hagardt drove in a run with a single up the middle, Schneider added a bunt RBI single, and Wriley Taylor's groundout to third scored Hagardt before Schneider crossed the plate on a throwing error to cap the frame
- The run-rule was completed in the third as four different players drove in runs — Sophia Angel sparked the frame with a double down the left-field line, an error in right field allowed Angel to score while two runners advanced, Zismer singled to the pitcher for another RBI, and pinch hitters Delaney Feldmann and Layla Underwood each added RBI singles to push the lead to 11-0
- Schneider finished 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBI; Schudel went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI out of the nine-hole; Mission committed four errors, all of which proved costly
Game Two: Columbia def. Mission, 4-2
- Megan Graver (W, 5-2): 6.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 7 SO; Micaiah Cordell: 1.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO — Graver set down Mission in order in the second, third, fifth, and sixth frames in a dominant performance
- Mission drew first blood in the top of the first when Apryl Zeno doubled up the middle and scored on an RBI single by Hailey Presley to take a 1-0 lead
- Columbia answered immediately in the bottom of the first — Zismer singled up the middle and moved to second on a wild pitch, Hagardt's sacrifice bunt pushed her to third, Schneider lined a two-run double to left-center to give the Cougars the lead, and Cassidy Avery followed with an RBI single up the middle to make it 3-1
- Graver kept Mission off the board from the second inning through the sixth, surrendering just two more hits over that stretch while punching out seven on the afternoon
- Columbia extended the lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth when Hagardt led off with a single and scored on a two-run double to right-center by Schneider, who finished 2-for-2 with two doubles, two RBI, and a run scored on the day
- The Cougars added their final run in the sixth when Sophia Angel laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Kennedy Schanuth to second before pinch hitter Layla Underwood doubled to left field to score Schanuth and push the lead to 4-1
- Mission made it a 4-2 game in the top of the seventh when Hailey Presley doubled up the middle, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on an RBI single by Mya Frillman; Cordell responded by striking out the final two batters to close out the sweep
- Schanuth went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored; Hagardt went 2-for-2 with a run scored; Columbia totaled 10 hits without issuing a walk
