Carlton Homers Twice, O'Neal Drives in Four as Cougars Roll Past Eutectics

ALTON, IL – Dylan Carlton launched a pair of home runs and Braydn O'Neal highlighted a seven-run second inning with a grand slam as Columbia College rolled to a 17-4 American Midwest Conference victory over the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy on Sunday afternoon. The Cougars improve to 27-11-1 overall and 17-3-1 in AMC play.

The Cougar offense erupted for 14 hits and drew eight walks on the afternoon. Carlton finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored, while Joey Marcinkiewicz went 3-for-4 with a double, two stolen bases and three runs. Tyler Renn added a 3-for-5 effort that included a home run and a double, driving in three. O'Neal's grand slam capped the second-inning outburst and he finished with four RBI on the day. Jack Dunn chipped in a two-run single in the seventh and Zac Fruend provided a two-run double in the fifth.

Kam Dohogne earned the victory on the mound, improving to 3-1 on the season. Dohogne worked 5.2 innings, allowing four runs — three earned — on seven hits while striking out four. Jackson Forck closed things out with 1.1 scoreless frames to complete the seven-inning affair.

Jacob Grim took the loss for UHSP, falling to 6-2. The Eutectics' starter was tagged for 11 runs — all earned — on eight hits with six walks and three home runs allowed over 4.2 innings.

Columbia wasted no time, sending nine batters to the plate in the top of the second. Marcinkiewicz led off with a single and Jack Dunn drew a walk before both moved up on a wild pitch. Hunter Shoulta and Hunter Hees followed with back-to-back walks to load the bases and force home Marcinkiewicz. O'Neal then cleared the bases with a mammoth grand slam to left field to put the Cougars up 5-0. Carlton kept the inning alive with a solo shot to center, and Renn followed with another solo home run to left to cap the seven-run frame and make it 7-0.

UHSP answered in the bottom of the second when Grim connected on a solo home run to left, and the Eutectics added an unearned run in the third when Brandon Gibbs scored on a catcher's error after a stolen-base sequence, trimming the deficit to 7-2.

Columbia pushed the lead back out in the fifth. Marcinkiewicz scored on a wild pitch to make it 8-2, then Fruend lined a two-run double to left center to score Hees and Shoulta. Carlton followed immediately with his second home run of the game, a two-run blast to center that drove in Fruend and pushed the Cougars ahead 12-2.

UHSP got two back in the sixth on a Jackson Hewitt double to left center that plated Nolan Harding and Holden Campbell, but Columbia answered with a five-run seventh to put the game away for good. Renn doubled down the right-field line to drive in two, Hoerchler followed with an RBI single through the left side, and Dunn capped the inning with a two-run single to left to set the final at 17-4.
